Fiji Weather 101: What to Expect During Your Dive Week
Planning a dive trip to Fiji is an exercise in anticipation. You’ve seen the photos of the crystal-clear water and the legendary shark encounters at The Colosseum, but one question always remains: What will the weather be like?
Because Fiji is a tropical destination, the weather is governed by two distinct seasons. While there is truly no “bad” time to dive in Beqa Lagoon, understanding the nuances of the Fijian climate can help you pack the right gear and set your expectations for the ultimate underwater adventure.
At Coral Coast Divers, we dive year-round. Here is your comprehensive guide to what to expect from the skies and the seas during your dive week.
The Tropical “Summer” (November – April)
The Season of Warmth and Vitality
Often referred to as the “wet” or “cyclone” season, this period is characterized by balmy temperatures and lush, green landscapes. Don’t let the “wet” label deter you; rain in Fiji often comes in short, heavy tropical bursts, usually in the late afternoon or overnight, leaving the days bright and sunny.
-
Water Temperature: This is when the ocean is at its warmest, ranging from 28°C to 30°C (82°F to 86°F). It’s like diving in a warm bath.
-
What to Wear: A 3mm shorty or even just a rash guard is often enough for most divers.
-
Marine Life: The warm water brings an explosion of life to the reefs. While bull sharks are present year-round, the summer months offer incredible visibility for observing the vibrant soft corals and massive schools of tropical fish.
-
Pro Tip: This is the best time for those who feel the cold easily. The humidity is higher, so light, breathable clothing is a must for your time on land.
The Tropical “Winter” (May – October)
The Season of Clarity and Peak Shark Action
This is the “dry” season, and for many seasoned divers, it is the prime time to visit. The air is cooler, the humidity drops, and the trade winds provide a refreshing breeze.
-
Water Temperature: The water cools down to between 24°C and 26°C (75°F to 79°F).
-
What to Wear: We recommend a full 3mm or 5mm wetsuit. If you are doing multiple dives a day, a hooded vest can be a great addition to keep your core temperature up.
-
Visibility: This is when Fiji’s visibility truly shines. With less runoff from rain, the water becomes exceptionally clear, often exceeding 30 meters (100 feet). This is “blue water” diving at its finest.
-
Shark Activity: While we see sharks every day, the cooler winter months often coincide with increased activity at our shark dive sites. The crisp water seems to bring an extra energy to the arena.
Understanding Visibility and Sea Conditions
Beqa Lagoon is famously protected by one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. This means that even if the open ocean is a bit choppy, our primary dive sites—including The Colosseum—remain relatively calm and accessible.
-
Visibility: On average, visibility in the lagoon ranges from 15 to 40 meters. It is influenced more by tides and local currents than by the weather alone.
-
Surface Intervals: At Coral Coast Divers, we ensure your time between dives is comfortable regardless of the weather. On sunnier days, you’ll enjoy the Fijian sun; on cooler or rainier days, we have a covered area of our boat and snacks to keep you cozy.
What Happens if it Rains?
A common question we get is, “Do you cancel dives if it rains?” The short answer is: We’re going to get wet anyway! Rain rarely affects the quality of a dive once you are below the surface. In fact, many divers find the sound of rain hitting the surface above them to be quite peaceful. We only cancel or reschedule dives in the event of high winds or extreme sea conditions that would compromise boat safety.
Packing Essentials for Every Season
Regardless of when you visit, these items should always be in your dive bag:
-
Reef-Safe Sunscreen: The Fijian sun is powerful, even on cloudy days. Protect the reef and your skin.
-
A Light Windbreaker: Essential for boat rides during the winter months or after a rain shower.
-
Dry Bag: To keep your camera gear and dry clothes safe from salt spray or rain.
-
Polarized Sunglasses: To help you spot the turquoise reefs from the boat.
The Best Time to Visit is Now
Whether you prefer the bath-like warmth of the summer or the crystal-clear vistas of the winter, Fiji offers a world-class diving experience every month of the year. At Coral Coast Divers, we are ready to welcome you to the water, rain or shine.
The sharks don’t mind the weather, and neither will you once you see the magic that awaits beneath the waves.
