Coral Planting: Be the Architect of a Thriving Reef
At Coral Coast Divers, we believe that every diver can be a powerful force for good. We are proud to introduce our Coral Planting & Marine Ecology Excursion—a hands-on, educational adventure that allows you to move beyond being a spectator and become an active restorer of Fiji’s magnificent underwater world.
As an SSI 5-Star Eco Dive Center, we have dedicated a portion of our marine reserve specifically to reef rehabilitation. This program is designed to give you the skills, knowledge, and experience to leave a lasting, positive impact on the Beqa Lagoon.
The Program: Education Meets Action
This all-inclusive experience is structured as a two-dive journey, preceded by a deep dive into the science of reef building.
Phase 1: Coral Ecology & Restoration Class Before we hit the water, you’ll join our instructors for a specialized classroom session. We cover the fascinating biology of corals (they’re animals, not plants!), the specific threats facing Fiji’s reefs, and the theory of asexual propagation. You’ll learn how to identify healthy “corals of opportunity”—fragments that have naturally broken off due to wave action or marine life—and how we can give them a second chance at life.
Phase 2: Dive 1 – The Collection & Survey During your first dive, we head into the reserve to act as citizen scientists. Under the guidance of our eco-professionals, you will learn to spot and carefully collect viable coral fragments. We focus on selecting resilient species that are naturally adapted to the local conditions, ensuring the highest possible survival rate for our new “transplants.”
Phase 3: Dive 2 – The Planting This is where the magic happens. We head to our dedicated restoration site within the marine reserve. You will learn the technical skills of outplanting—securing your collected fragments to the reef substrate or specialized nursery structures. Using eco-friendly methods, you’ll carefully anchor each piece, creating the foundation for a new coral colony.
Why Your Contribution Matters
Coral reefs are the “rainforests of the sea,” supporting 25% of all marine life despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. By planting just a few fragments, you are:
-
Creating New Habitat: Providing homes for juvenile fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates.
-
Boosting Biodiversity: Helping to restore the 3-D structure of the reef that was lost to storms or environmental stress.
-
Protecting the Future: Each fragment you plant will grow, eventually spawning and helping to repopulate neighboring reefs naturally.

Leave a Legacy in the Beqa Lagoon
Years from now, the corals you plant today will have grown into thriving colonies, teeming with life. This is your chance to give back to the ocean that gives us so much.
