Understanding Bull Sharks
What are Bull Sharks?
Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) are a species of shark that have long held a reputation as some of the ocean’s most fascinating and formidable inhabitants. These remarkable creatures are known for their distinctive physical features, making them easily recognizable even to novice divers. With their stocky build, broad snout, and gray or brownish-gray coloration, bull sharks are a force to be reckoned with in the world of marine life.
What truly sets bull sharks apart is their remarkable adaptability. Unlike many other shark species, bull sharks are not restricted to saltwater environments alone. In fact, they are equally comfortable in freshwater as they are in the open sea. This remarkable adaptability allows them to thrive in diverse habitats, from coastal waters and estuaries to river mouths and even deep oceanic realms.
As apex predators, bull sharks play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the marine ecosystem. Their position at the top of the food chain reflects their predatory prowess, and they are known to feed on a variety of prey, including fish, rays, and even other sharks.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the logistics and preparations required for a bull shark dive in Fiji and address the most commonly asked questions to ensure you have a safe and enriching experience beneath the waves.
Safety Precautions and Preparation
Dive Certification and Experience
Before embarking on a thrilling bull shark dive adventure in Fiji, it’s crucial to ensure you possess the appropriate scuba diving certification and experience. While bull shark dives are accessible to divers with varying skill levels, the following considerations are essential:
- Scuba Certification: To participate in our Fiji shark dive, it is required that you hold at least an Open Water Diver certification. However, having an Advanced Open Water Diver certification or higher is advantageous, as it often implies a greater level of experience and comfort in underwater environments.
- Experience: While specific dive requirements aren’t written in stone, having some prior dive experience is highly beneficial. Comfort with buoyancy control, dive equipment, and being a confident diver will enhance your overall safety and enjoyment during the dive.

We truly believe we are the best dive shop in Pacific Harbour.
Dive Etiquette and Behavior
Responsible diving practices and respectful behavior are key to a successful bull shark dive and the well-being of these magnificent creatures. Before each bull shark dive we offer an educational session to familiarize you with the sharks you may witness as well as a very in depth run down of the procedures. This is not an exploratory dive. There are specific procedures which must be followed to ensure your and everyone else’s safety. If you are not following these procedures you will be escorted back to the boat, and your dive will be complete.
Interacting with Bull Sharks in Fiji
- Maintain Respectful Distance: Always maintain a respectful distance from bull sharks and avoid touching or provoking them. Remember that you are a guest in their world. Our experienced divemasters, instructors and guides are very comfortable with the feeding procedures and will help keep the sharks a safe distance from the guests. We ask that you follow their instructions and lead at all times while underwater.
Environmental Impact
- We Participate in Shark Feeding: Feeding is a somewhat controversial practice in some parts of the world when it comes to shark encounters. When it comes to the Beqa Lagoon, the history and the results speak for themselves. In the late 1990s the Beqa Lagoon was heavily fished and did not have rich coral life in comparison to other parts of Fiji. Local dive shops, however, saw the shark population as an opportunity for tourism. Working with local villages parts of the Lagoon were protected, and the local fisherman became involved in shark diving rather than fishing these areas. What’s incredible is that not only did the shark feeding increase the shark population, it has also had an incredible impact on the coral life in the lagoon as well as many other marine animal populations. The Beqa Lagoon right now is as healthy as it has been in recorded history, with a booming tourism business, thanks in large part to the world class scuba diving, and the local villages are enjoying this revitalized Lagoon as well as the tourism and development and opportunities which have occurred.
Is Shark Diving Safe In Fiji?
Shark diving is very safe if you follow the dive plan which we set out. We have a perfect safety record on our shark dives and our customers, many of whom are nervous prior to their experience, always come back marveling at how well planned and how safe they actual felt during the encounter. One thing which sets our dive site The Colosseum apart in terms of safety and making our customers feel at ease, is that the viewing area is backed on one side by a wall. This offers a great advantage as all of our clients kneel in front of this natural underwater wall, which makes all of the shark encounters occur in front of them. This offers a much more relaxed atmosphere if you are nervous at all, as you can be assured, nothing can be approaching from behind you.
