Meet the Reef Sharks of Beqa Lagoon: Whitetip, Blacktip, and Grey Reef Sharks

1. Whitetip Reef Shark: The Resting Hunter
Appearance
The Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) is easily recognized by the white tips on its dorsal and tail fins. These sharks have slender, elongated bodies that can grow up to 6 feet in length. Their color ranges from light grey to brown, often with small darker spots scattered across their skin, which helps them blend seamlessly into the coral-rich environment of Beqa Lagoon.
Behavior
Whitetip Reef Sharks are nocturnal hunters, but they are commonly seen during the day, often resting motionless on the sandy bottom or tucked into crevices within the reef. Unlike many other shark species, the Whitetip Reef Shark can pump water over its gills while stationary, allowing it to rest for extended periods. This behavior is a frequent sight in Beqa Lagoon, where these sharks take advantage of the numerous caves and ledges to shelter from the daylight.
When night falls, Whitetip Reef Sharks become active, gliding gracefully through the reef in search of prey. Habitat
In Beqa Lagoon, Whitetip Reef Sharks are commonly found in shallow waters, typically around coral reefs at depths ranging from 20 to 130 feet. They favor areas with abundant hiding spots, such as overhangs, caves, and crevices, where they can rest undisturbed during the day. 2. Blacktip Reef Shark: The Shy Cruiser
Appearance
The Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) is named for the distinctive black tips on its fins, most notably on the dorsal fin, which is often the first thing divers notice as these sharks glide gracefully through the water. These sharks have a streamlined body that can reach up to 6.5 feet in length. Their coloration is typically grey on top, fading to white on the belly, with a lighter stripe running along their flanks.
Behavior
Blacktip Reef Sharks are known for their active and inquisitive nature, often seen cruising along the edges of the reef. Despite their curiosity, they are relatively shy and will usually swim away if approached too closely. This behavior is common in Beqa Lagoon, where divers can observe these sharks patrolling the reef but should be mindful not to startle them.
These sharks are opportunistic feeders, preying on a variety of small fish, squid, and crustaceans. 3. Grey Reef Shark: The Bold Predator
Appearance
The Grey Reef Shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) is one of the larger reef sharks in Beqa Lagoon, capable of growing up to 8 feet in length. They have a robust, muscular build with a broad head and a characteristic rounded snout. Their coloration is a darker grey on top, with a white belly and a distinctive white-edged dorsal fin. Their overall appearance is more imposing than the Whitetip and Blacktip Reef Sharks, making them stand out in the waters of Beqa Lagoon. Behavior
Known for their bold and sometimes curious nature, Grey Reef Sharks are more likely to approach divers than other reef sharks. They are often seen patrolling the outer edges of the reef, particularly near drop-offs where the water is deeper. In Beqa Lagoon, these sharks are a common sight during drift dives, where they swim effortlessly against the current, scanning the reef for prey.
Grey Reef Sharks are highly territorial, and during mating season, they can display more aggressive behaviors, including a distinctive threat display where they arch their backs, lower their pectoral fins, and swim in tight circles. However, outside of these situations, they are generally calm and pose little risk to divers. Their diet consists mainly of fish, cephalopods, and occasionally smaller sharks, making them one of the top predators in the reef ecosystem.

In Beqa Lagoon, Grey Reef Sharks are typically found in deeper waters near the edges of the reef, especially in areas with strong currents or near drop-offs. They are less common in shallow waters, preferring the depths where they can hunt more effectively.
